Liam left the hotel room after she drew her line in the sand, and part of Kenzie hoped he was gone for good. Or at least that was what she told herself as she settled in to watch her target. Milo had a woman under each arm, a cigarette in one hand, and a bottle of beer in the other. On the table in front of him, one of his men created several little white lines.

How the fuck was he still alive if he’d spent the last fifteen years partying like this?

She pushed to her feet and glanced at the door. It would be better if Liam had washed his hands of her. He hadn’t exactly looked at her differently after she’d told him some of what went down in that camp, but eventually he would. Once he saw the scars left over. She’d been luckier than Luca in that way—all Kenzie’s scars were internal. The few times one of the patrons hurt her badly enough to wound, she’d received the best medical care and they’d gone above and beyond in their attempt to keep her beauty from being marred.

A pretty doll to be used as they saw fit.

To be used as Milo saw fit.

She turned away from the window. She couldn’t stand to look at him any longer. Maybe she should have taken Arthur and sent Luca and the princess here instead. Her brother carried his own baggage—they all did—but he wouldn’t be in danger of putting a bullet between Milo and leaving it at that.

Probably.

She sighed. Tomorrow they’d have to meet with the guy Ryu found who supplied the girls Milo played with, and sometimes broke. She could theoretically broker the deal herself, playing the part of a naive small-town girl who thought the only thing she was signing up for was to give some rich dude a girlfriend experience. It would be easier to pull off with Liam, though.

She hadn’t quite gotten around to telling him that part of the plan yet, because she knew exactly what he’d say.

The door opened and Kenzie jumped. Liam walked in with two white plastic takeout bags. He raised his eyebrows at her, all of the earlier anger and frustration gone. “We’re going to eat, and then you’re going to go over every detail of the plan.”

“Actually—”

“If I’m satisfied, then we’ll move forward with it.”

Kenzie blinked. “You want to run that by me again?”

He strode to the small table behind the couch and set the food there. “Come here.”

“Okay…” She moved to him slowly, taking in the way the lines on his face seemed a little deeper than they had been when he first arrived on the island. Part of that came from the Wild Hunt, but she had no illusions who held the blame for the rest.

Her.

“Why do you bother, Liam? I’m sure there are other women in Boston—or, hell, the world—who wouldn’t put you through the wringer and don’t have a boatload worth of baggage that requires stalking and kidnapping people.
